HEALTH & HOME

The science behind our approach

When it comes to wanting to create a healthier lifestyle, whether it’s about nutrition, fitness, or other health practice, one of the most deterring obstacles is not knowing which information or recommendations can be trusted.

For most people, it’s already hard to begin a new health practice or lifestyle change as it is, so adding on the need to sift through copious amounts of research and pull information together – on a topic they may not have previous knowledge on, can be more than enough to overwhelm and end their habit before they even start.

That’s why when it comes to creating a healthy home, we stick to the science. From assessing the proven impact toxins have on health to ways our homes can be created to optimize our health, we focus on providing easy to implement, science-based research-backed ways to create a home that truly maximizes your health!

STEP 1 – MINIMIZE TOXINS EXAMPLE
Research shows that a class of artificial chemicals known as obesogens, are linked to causing weight gain and are found in many of our homes.
Plastic Products
Water
Food Packaging
Vinyl Flooring
Paint
These chemicals cause our hormone levels to change leading to this increased weight gain.

Since our client is wanting to lose weight, considering ways to avoid these chemicals in her space is one of the ways we can address her health goal of losing weight. By looking at how to avoid specific obesogenic chemicals in her space, we can help aid her body in being able to lose and not gain excessive weight. We can do this by investigating which design or home products have these types of chemicals, then listing them out and prioritizing which should be swapped first based on impact they have and then swapping those out better alternatives.

EXAMPLE CASE

At Health & Home, our goal is to create a healthy home that works to help prevent disease and optimize your health! We do this by applying the latest research and working through our unique appraoch shown below.

STEP 1 – MINIMIZE TOXINS
STEP 2 – OPTIMIZE DESIGN
STEP 3 – MAXIMIZE HEALTH

The following is a brief walk through of just one example of ways we would apply research findings to help our client reach their health goals!

In this example, one of our client’s goals is that she would like to lose weight and eat healthier. Here are some ways we could approach that.

STEP 2 – OPTIMIZE DESIGN EXAMPLE
A study looked at the orders of 160 diners at four chain restaurants. Half the diners were seated in dimly-lit rooms, and half were seated in well-lit areas.
The people who were sitting in low light ordered 39% more calories.
The people in brighter surroundings were 16% -24% more likely to choose healthy items.
In follow-up experiments, the researchers replicated these results with hundreds of college-aged students.

Since eating healthy and losing weight are the goals of our client, applying these findings is just one of the ways we would consider addressing her health goals when designing her space. We could do this in a variety of ways from adding windows, changing types of light bulbs, adding specific types of additional lighting to the spaces she eats in such as the kitchen, dining room etc.

STEP 3 – MAXIMIZE HEALTH EXAMPLE
These changes alone are not a guarantee that she will meet her goal of losing weight, but they do set her up to be able to be successful in implementing the changes she would like to see & be more likely to achieve them. Here are just two of the ways these changes can impact and maximize her overall heath beyond her goal of weight loss.
Through addressing and minimizing toxins that could be contributing to weight gain, she is also going to be improving her overall health as many of those chemicals can cause other issues as well so mitigating them has many benefits.

By taking steps to optimize her health by addressing lighting and food consumption, she will hopefully be able to lose weight and/or eat healthier which both have prominent impacts on overall health and wellness.
